In 30 years of practice when this comes up I tell my patients I've never admitted a patient to the hospital due to diet soda, I've never written a death certificate with diet soda as cause of death. But obesity? Diabetes? Too numerous to count. That said, how about a nice glass of Poland Spring Water?  A quote from another doctor.

Yes there are limited studies that argue that artificial sweeteners are also bad. So my focus is on people who are looking to lose more body fat and would like a soda. If you don't care for stevia or seltzer water with a splash of juice and want more than water, then this seems like an occasional treat that keeps you on the path of developing a healthier diet.

Aspirations and #MakeaWish

7/24/2015

Dreams, ambitions, making wishes come true!

You should have dreams and aspirations and the desire to make them come true.  Here is an inspirational story out of Minnesota for a young girl, Ariya Smith.  Thanks to Make a Wish Foundation, Maya Moore and the Minnesota Lynx.

Amanda Bingson, Body Image and Olympic Ideal

7/16/2015

What can you shed on the subject of body image? Here is a follow up on the Serena Williams story that revolved around two points, *apparently some people think she looks like a man ( the image in the prior post with J.K Rowlings comment should dispel that ridiculous notion.) and *body conscious athletes and how they view themselves.

Here is an Olympic hopeful who has a refreshing take on her Olympian body.

Meet Ananda Bingson who has these two memorable quotes

• "Whatever your body type is, just use it"

• "I'll be honest, I like everything about my body."

Please share this with your friends. I may help give them a different perspective.

Women, Sports, Body Image and Working out

7/14/2015

The NYT recently ran an article about tennis pros who are overly concerned about looking "masculine".  Unfortunately the article seemed to pit Serena Williams v. the other pros.

•I think the intention was for this to be a conversation starter.

• Serena,Venus and the USA National Woman's Soccer team are great sports models for young girls. This is probably a testament to Title IX.

And it highlights that in the USA we are finally getting our heads around the idea that women come in all different shapes and sizes and it should be embraced and celebrated.

( I say this because it seems that the European women are hampered by the idea of having to look feminine.)

It would be wonderful if both genders were happy with their bodies. And if anything wanted to be a better version of themselves.  Which is achievable.

Here is the link to the NYT story.

What does that drink after your workout do?

7/8/2015

Is it wise to have a drink right after you workout? How could it impact your results? Alcohol could affect you—and your workouts—in unexpected ways. After cardio, alcohol could impact your body’s store of glycogen, the primary fuel for working out at higher intensities, causing you to feel fatigued faster during your next workout. Drinking after resistance training could reduce protein synthesis, the process that’s needed for your muscles to rebuild and grow stronger, So you might be slightly sabotaging your strength-building and toning.
