A running legend remembered. Pre running.

5/30/2014

Today is a sad day for running nerds like myself.

On this day in 1975 Pre lost his life after he crashed his car.

Just 24 years old, he left an indelible footprint in our running culture.

I was lucky enough to run for Nike and be immersed in that culture. It was there that you realize his presence looms larger than life.

He was a major influence in my life.

If it wasn't for Pre my life would be different.

He, in the metaphorical sense, gave me access to elite coaches who taught me and runners who shared everything related to running and coaching that you still don't see in print. Knowledge that is invaluable and in short supply, yet we get excited to share it all when somebody wants in to the circle.

Decades later Pre is still an inspiration to many runners and athletes for various reasons.

Hope Pre is enjoying another bell lap today!

Thanks Pre.

Thank you!

On this Memorial Day I reflect back on the military men I've trained and helped become either an Army Ranger or Green Beret.

You should know we have an amazing group of women and men defending our country, from what I can glean from those who I've encountered thru FITCamp.

I say Thank You!

And I hope you have an opportunity to thank them for serving to keep The USA strong.

Happy Memorial Day!

Running Passion lives on after teen dies.

This is your FITCAMP workout for Memorial Day.

Read this poignant story on how running and passion can touch people. Where 16 year old Cameron Gallagher dies and gives birth to her dream, the Speak Up 5K.

In lieu of class I want you to think about how you can help one person and/or forgive one person.

If you are a parent grab a tissue as you read this. And please share this inspirational story with others.

Thank you and Happy Memorial Day from

How exercise + 360 calorie/day diet = Losing 2.75 lbs/day!

FITCamp Math...Exercise & Diet= ???

A group of researchers in Europe took healthy, overweight men, restricted their calorie consumption, and put them on a grueling exercise regimen for four days.

I just want to highlight some of the important variables to consider:

Healthy males were involved.

Their calorie consumption was in liquid form.

At most, 90 grams was the highest total of protein consumption.

The Results of the Study:

Participants lost approximately 2.75 lbs/day over four days

Approximately 5.7-6 lbs lost over the 4-day period was loss of muscle mass.

Less than half of the 11 lb-weight loss came from fat loss.

The study reinforces the idea that exercise can rev up metabolism and suppress hunger. For the participants, the weight stayed off after a month! There was even some additional fat loss after the initial follow up. While you already know how important effective exercise combined with smart eating is to being healthy, the participants sustained success might also be attributed to the boost in motivation after experiencing such drastic progress.

"The researchers were startled that the volunteers were able to keep the weight off. And the best they could surmise was that the men were inspired by their hyper compressed success to change their lifestyles. "

I am not surprised given the quick success and that they would be measured again with their peers.

This study needs to be replicated along with a thorough follow up. Possibly with an evaluation has to do their motivation.

Tips for Running Smart- Be Mindful

Many of my clients love the sport of running and are always setting new race goals.  As a former competitive runner myself, nothing pleases me more than hearing my clients smash their records.  It’s pretty typical for students to catch me up on their progress before or after FITCamp classes and for me to provide a few words of wisdom.  Today, I am reposting some words of wisdom for those of you who might find this beneficial for your training as well!

Today’s guidance is about RUNNING SMART.  Many people start their journey to becoming a faster runner JUST by training hard. i.e. logging many miles, cross-training for many hours, rolling their sore and beaten body, and then repeating. But they forget that training is about quality over quantity.  So here are a few tips to teach you how to achieve quality in your training.

  1. Be aware of your body- your movement, feedback from your muscles. You need to recognize if your form is breaking down at mile 5 even if your goal was to run 10 miles.  If you’re in so much pain you can’t fix the bad form, STOP.  Tired, sloppy running = injuries.
  2. Be ready to adapt to your environment.  When you recognize discomfort or potential for injury, adjust the way you run.  If you’ve already strengthened those muscles by cross-training, you’ll have an easier time engaging the muscles when you need them.  FITCamp is a great way to work all of the supporting cast- not just the primary muscles you use to propel your body forward.

Most professional runners are constantly thinking about their form and maximizing efficiency when they run.  They’re not zoning out.  For us recreational runners, it’s probably enough to pluck our heads out of the clouds every once in a while to check in with our bodies and running form.

Wishing you many more miles of happy running!

Struggling with a cranky co-worker?  Stuck in a mental block yourself?

I say "Get Moving!" I have already espoused the linkage between exercise and mood. But recently, a Stanford study has emerged that links exercise to being..
  1. Quantifiably more creative
  2. A better problem solver
To get your creative juices on a roll, go for a stroll.
