“It seems clear that exercise is very important if you wish to keep the weight off."

1/28/2015

Exercise can help keep the pounds off after weight loss, and weight training may be particularly beneficial, a new study shows.

Dr. Hunter is quoted above, conducted a study that found resistance training helps you stay lean after a weight loss diet.

The group, representing 1/3 of the weight loss subjects, that did resistance training had an easier time keeping the weight off and incurred additional benefits in their everyday activities. They outperformed the runners and the sedentary group at the end of the study.

Conclusion: Make sure your doing some resistance training during the week!

Can you find joy in a hug?

@Fitcampnyc posts the top 9 scientific reasons why giving and receiving hugs are good for you and the planet. Have a happy hug day!

National Hug day...THE 10 BENEFITS OF HUGGING!

1)    Hugs make us feel “happy”! When we hug another person, our bodies release oxytocin, a hormone associated with “happiness,” according to scientific studies. [1]

2)    Hugs alleviate stress! Just as a good hug increases our oxytocin levels, it decreases our cortisol or “stress” levels. [2]

3)    Babies need hugs as much as water and food! According to researchers at Harvard University, hugs help promote normal levels of cortisol necessary for child development. [3]

4)    Hugs make us better students! Students who receive a supportive touch from a teacher are twice as likely to volunteer in class. [4]

5)    Hugs improve our game! Scientists at University of California, Berkley discovered that the more affectionate members of a team are with each other, the more likely they are to win. [4]

6)    A hug a day keeps the doctor away! A hug stimulates the thymus gland, which in turn regulates the production of white blood cells that keep us healthy and disease-free. [5]

7)    A hug stops the bug! Researchers at Carnegie Mellon proved that individuals who were sick and received hugs had less severe symptoms and were able to get better quicker. [6]

8)    A hugging heart is a healthy heart! Research from University of North Carolina showed that a good hug helps ease blood flow and lower cortisol levels, which in turn help lower our heart rates. [7]

9)    A hugging couple is a happy couple! Couples that experience their partners’ love through physical affection share higher oxytocin levels. [8]

10)    Hugs let someone know you care without having to say a word! According to Dacher Keltner, professor of psychology at University of California, Berkeley, we can identify love from simple human touch – imagine how much love a big hug can communicate! [9]

Fat Arms Workout?! Why the internet is not always your best fitness resource.

1/21/2015

Picture
@FitcampNYC works hard to get you in phenomenal shape. So when this pops up on the Internet the head scratching begins. What's next after the Fat arms workout, Fat ankles?

Fat arm workouts, could this be a new trend?

No it's not. However the advice is entertaining, especially step #7..Rest the arms, from the

"How to Gain Fat on the arms" article.

If the Paris mayor can sue Fox News for spreading misinformation, mmmm.....

Obviously erroneous information doesn't always jump out so egregiously, so be diligent about the health and fitness information that is floating around on the Internet or on television.

Could eating only within a 12-hour period daily make a big diet difference?

1/16/2015

Over this upcoming year you will hear more about this "diet" on news and talk shows.

It's an interesting idea that re-emerged about 12 years ago has been bandied about in the

"broscience" circles for the last 6-7 years.

This NYT article points out the success that lab mice have had with what I have always called the "small window" diet.

Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions.

RoyAlexanderFitness.com wish for you this year is that you experience moments of clarity when you are doing something you love or when you are around someone you love. It is a precious thing to regularly experience and think..."Every moment that I am doing something that I love, I will stop and I will take a conscious, moment to say, ‘This is living. This is why I am living.’ And Be Grateful.

Resolve to live 2015 with the right attitude

Two stories that exemplify being brave and courageous. May these stories motivate you. One man's battle with cancer and two men are trying to scale more than half a mile of El Capitan without ropes except to catch their falls, which many would consider the hardest climb in the world.

To the two men scaling El Captain, boo-yah!
